SECURITY COUNCIL
NON-PERMANENT MEMBERS
SAN FRANCISCO, May 16
The non-permanent members of the Security Council will be elected primarily on the basis of their past military contributions, also their geographic position. This was decided by the structure and procedures committee today. It is one of Australia’s principal amendments and was passed with only four dissenting votes. The six non-permanent members would be elected by the General Assembly.
The amendment must now receive the approval of the Security Council commission and the plenary session. The Greek Foreign Minister, M. Sofianopoulos, chairman of the committee on the structure of the Security Council, told the press that the committee had received more than 100 amendments, including one submitted by several Latin-American Republics, who are seeking at least one Latin-American representative on the Security Council at all times.
