WYNYARD FAMILY’S FINE WAR RECORD Among the overseas casualties announced this week was the death of Lieutenant Harry Wynyard, third son of Mr and Mrs J. G. Wynyard, Kihikihi and younger brother of Captain J. G. Wynyard, a former All Black footballer who was killed in action in Libya. Lieutenant Harry Wynyard married prior to going overseas, and his wife resides at Gordonton. He was aged 29 and was educated at the Te Awamutu District High School and New Plymouth Boys’ High School, afterward engaging in farming. Lieutenant Wynyard joined the Yvaikato Mounted Rifles, gaining his commission. He was the first secretary of the Te Awamutu Young Farmers’ Club, a foundation member of the Te Awamutu Light Horse Association, a Waipa Rugby Union representative, and prominent in other forms of sport. He served with the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces in the Pacific and then in the Middle East, and he was killed in action in Northern Italy. His eldest brother, Lieutenant Robert Wynyard, served in Africa and was invalided home. All three brothers held commissions in the N.Z.E.F. Divisional Cavalry. Nurse Gladwyn Wynyard is on the staff of a military hospital in New Zealand, and Miss Margaret Wynyard, who went to England just before the outbreak of hostilities, rendered war service for some time before being attached to New Zealand House, London.
