PANAY UNDER CONTROL

MARTIAL LAW IN JAPAN WASHINGTON, March 22 General MacArthur announces that all organised enemy resistance on Panay Island, in the Philippines, has been crushed. The Japanese news agency announces measures which will place the whole of Japan under martial law. The hew defence corps, the counterpart of the German Volkssturm, will be set up soon.

In Northern Luzon, the 33rd Division joined guerilla forces at San Fernando and are now advancing eastward from Bauang toward Baguio. In Southern Luzon, Cavite Province is now cleared except for scattered remnants. On Mindanao, the 41st Division continued its general advance north of Zamboanga. Zamboanga harbour has been cleared and the airfield is operating unhindered. Our planes destroyed two midget submarines at Davao.
