LAMBING INCREASE
ESTIMATED NUMBERS The percentage of lambs born in the North Island in the current season is estimated to be 90.08, and in the South Island 94.07, according to estimates made by the livestock division of the Department of Agriculture. Applying these percentages to the number of breeding ewes in the respective islands at April 30, 1944, they would give 10,576,495 for the North Island and 8,286,568 for the the South Island, a total of 18,863,063. This gives the highest total recorded in the last six years. Last year the estimate was 7,813,548 for the South Island and 9,823,748 for the North. The Dominion totals since 1939 have been: 1939, 17,017,395; 1940, 17,796,006; 1941, 18,250,862; 1942, 18,314,179; 1943, 17,637,296.
