GREAT ARMIES READY \ NEW YORK, Jan. 4 After a visit to the Warsaw front the United Press’ Moscow correspondent reports that' several mighty Russian and Polish armies are poised at Praga, on the ice-covered Vistula river, for a decisive winter offensive. AMERICANS’ SUCCESS LONDON, Jan. 4 It is stated at the Supreme Headquarters that the First Army’s coun-ter-offensive has broadened its front to thirteen miles—namely, eight miles east of Grandmenil and five miles westward. Thirteen hundred prisoners have, been taken. The Daily Mail’s correspondent with the First Army says that the first Panzer infantrymen taken prisoner were a shivering and oddly-garbed lot. They reminded one of pictures of Germans on the Russian front in winter—sacking around their feet, carpets and rugs over their shoulders, shawls around their heads, anything to keep out the cold. The American commanding general said that the night before the attack was the worst he had ever lived through. As he led his tanks they slithered around bends and crashed into other tanks, trees, lamp-posts and even houses. The American Press correspondent with the American Third Army reports that the Americans gained half a mile on two sides of Bastogne. TRAGEDY IN NORTH WHANGAREI. Friday A tragedy is reported from Mangamuka Gorge, half-way between Okaihau and Kaitaia. When a caller visited the farm of Mr J. R. Crallan this morning he found Mrs Mary Orikena dead, apparently as the result of head wounds.
