LABOUR SHORT

HARVESTING OPERATIONS Rain today caused a hold-up in harvesting, but it is expected that the interruption will be only of brief duration. Large quantities of hay have been harvested during the favourable weather since Christmas but it is estimated that not half of the Waikato crop has yet been handled. A heavy programme of work lies ahead and the main difficulty is the inadequate supply of labour. At least twice the number of soldiers at present in camp could be used, one farmer this morning stating that in his particular district four times the number of men could be employed. At the Cambridge harvesting camp there are 29 soldiers, 18 to 20 at No. 1 Bridge, Hamilton, 24 at Ngaruawahia, and 26 at Te Awamutu. In the Cambridge area it has been the policy to send the men out to back country farmers where it is more difficult to obtain casual labour than near the towns. The soldiers are reported to be doing excellent work and proving of inestimable assistance during the busy season.
