MIGRANTS TO AUSTRALIA
MINISTER MAY BE APPOINTED (Received Nov. 22, 1 p.m.) MELBOURNE, Nov. 22 A Minister of Migration is likely to be appointed soon by the Commonwealth Government. A detailed report on migration has been prepared for the Cabinet by a sub-com-mittee of four Federal Ministers. A member of the sub-committee, Mr Calwell, Minister of Information, said he believed the only immigrants likely to be available after the war would be from Europe. Nor was it going to be easy to compete with South Africa and Canada for Europen immigrants. The Americas had the advantage of being close, with cheaper fares and a large number of people of similar nationality already there. Mr Calwell praised the American attitude to migrants. The fine types of American servicemen seen in Australia were proof of worth of the “melting pot” theory. Australia could not afford exclusiveness and racial intolerance.
