GUNS SEIZED BY CANADIANS
GERMANS IN CALAIS GRANTED TRUCE BRITISH WIDEN DUTCH CORRIDOR LONDON, Sept. 29. Cap Griz Nez, west of Calais, lias been captured by the Canadians, who took 200 prisoners and seized eight long-range guns which have been firing across the Channel. The Germans in Calais have been granted a truce of 24 hours to allow the evacuation of civilians from the city. The enemy first asked that Calais he declared an open city hut were told they must surrender or fight. They then appealed for a 24-hours truce so that civilians could he evacuated, and this was granted. In Holland the British Second Army is steadily widening the corridor to Nijmegen against almost continuous German counterattacks. Three heavy attacks were beaten hack but another made slight gains.
The Germans made a drive across the Rhine south of Arnhem but their bridgehead was wiped out. To the east the Germans are being driven back across the Maas. The Germans appear to be digging in in strength along the eastern hank of the Maas. Farther north our patrols have pushed six miles west of Elst.
Royal Air Force tactical aircraft were over Holland and beyond the German border yesterday. Their main task was the defence of the Nijmegen bridge. Pilots reported signs of German preparations for a ground attack toward the northern end of the salient. Fighter-bombers and rocket aircraft attacked the German troop concentrations and supply lines. Twenty-two German aircraft were destroyed.
