COUNCIL HOUSES “GOOD SEASIDE COTTAGES” WELLINGTON, Friday. The cottages built by the Hamilton Borough Council, though no doubt suitable for pensioners or childless couples, were absolutely inadequate , as family houses, said Mr R. Coulter (Government —Raglan) during the Budget debate in the House. “ They are not going to build any more of them either,” interjected Mr J. Thom (Government—Thames). “ As a matter of fact,” said Mr Coulter, “they would make very good seaside cottages, and I suggest that the best thing the Hamilton Borough Council could do would be to move these cottages out to Raglan. If they really want to help the housing position in Hamilton let them build something in keeping with the work already done in that beautiful town by this Government. “ I hope Hamilton will embark on a real housing scheme,” Mr Coulter continued, “but I suggest that the Government deserved better of Hamilton, if only because of its wonderful housing scheme, than that the member for Hamilton should come here to lecture the Government about Its housing programme." During the same period of eight years cheap Government money had been available to the Hamilton Borough Council for housing, but until just recently nothing whatever had been done. For eight years the mountain had laboured and had brought forth a mouse. Mr W. C. M. Denham (Government—lnvercargill): A poor one at that. There was absolutely no comparison, added Mr Coulter, between the houses built by the Government in Hamilton and three cottages erected by the Hamilton Borouoh CnuneiL
