INQUEST CONCLUDED

KARAPIRO WORKMAN KILLED That death was due to injuries caused by the collapse of an air-com-pression plant, by which stones and debris were blown into deceased’s face from the pressure pipe-line, was the verdict returned by the coroner, Mr S. L. Paterson, S.M., at an inquest resumed at Hamilton yesterday into the death of Russell Henry Ward, who died in the Waikato Hospital on May 27. Ward, aged 21, was a pump attendant at the hydro-electric works at Karapiro. The evidence showed that on the night of May 18 Ward was a member of a shift gang operating a pressure pump conveying concrete through a pipeline. When the line blocked efforts were made to clear it, but these failed, and the line was being disconnected for examination section by section when there was a blast of compressed air that knocked Ward over. He was quickly taken to hospital, where he died on May 27.
