DESTRUCTION OF RATS
HAMILTON CAMPAIGN OPENS A campaign to exterminate rats, such as has proved so successful in other centres, will be conducted in Hamilton this, week. Although the incidence of the rodents may not be so high in Hamilton as in some of the older, and larger cities, the majority of householders have had evidence of their presence in varying numbers. It is estimated that thousands of pounds worth of foodstuffs and merchandise are destroyed or damaged every year through the depredations of rats, while their menace in spreading disease and epidemics is proverbial. Arrangements have been made for borough residents to obtain free, on application, a supply of rat poison from the sanitary inspector’s office, Alma Street. Householders may assist to a large extent in checking the menace by keeping all food covered, ensuring that no scraps are left about, and that animals or birds are not overfed late in the day. All garbage should be burned or placed in covered receptacles.
