Wilkes Island, starting a large fire, i Mitchells attacked Nauru Island and j hit the phosphate plant and anti-air- : craft positions and started fires, i A Navy search plane probably sank ! a 10,000-ton Japanese freighter and i a medium cargo ship in Truk harbour. The same plane later bombed and strafed the airstrip and barracks area on Puluwat Island. Flak wounded the pilot and co-pilot, but the plane returned. Liberators and Mitchells bombed Ponape Island and hit the seaplane base, airfields and dock installations at Ponape town. Other planes b9mbed enemy positions in the Marslialls, hitting runways and gun position.
