DAMAGE TO HOUSE
FIRE IN CLAUDELANDS The Hamilton Fire Brigade turned out on three occasions within an hour and a-half last night, but in one case the call proved to be a false alarm. Considerable damage to a house and contents was caused by a fire which swept through a dwelling in Daisy Street, off Peachgrove Road, Claudelands. It is believed that the fire originated in the vicinity of a gas-meter and gas-stove. There was no-one in the house at the time but a neighbour the alarm at 953 p.m. The house was owned by Mr G. Haworth, of Mount Eden, Auckland, and was occupied by Mr J. Donaldson. A fire in a taxi-cab in Anglesea Street was extinguished with the use of the brigade’s first-aid aparatus at 10.15 p.m. A false alarm, which was described by a brigade official as malicious, was received an hour later. The official said that a woman’s voice gave the alarm over the telephone, the directions proving to be false.
