LOCAL AND GENERAL
Building Society Appropriation A free-of-interest appropriation of £IOOO was held by the Hamilton Starr-Bowkett Building Society last night, the successful shareholder being Mr T. G. Greenin, of Torrington Avenue, Frankton, who held cluster No. 69.
Prices For Cut Flowers Whether or not it may be attributed to the increased demand through the presence in the district of American servicemen on leave a phenomenally high level of prices for cut flowers is prevailing in Hamilton. Bunches of the sweet-scented daphne have been selling at 9d each on the local markets. Heavy Bus Traffic
Phenomenal scenes of congestion were observed at the corner of Hcud and Victoria Streets this morning when buses were leaving heavilyladen for the Te Rapa racecourse. There was a continuous surge of people seeking accommodation on a seemingly endless stream of buses and it was necessary for several bus inspectors to lend assistance in despatching the buses, while the Borough Council’s chief traffic inspector was also on the scene to supervise the traffic. Comb-out of Grade A Men
The desirability of a stricter combout of Grade A men for service overseas was expressed by several speakers at the annual meeting of the Waikato Returned Services Association. Opinions differed, but there was a consensus of opinion that there were too many single Grade A men in sheltered essential industries, and the claim that there was a shortage of canable keymen was no longer tenable. The following resolution was carried unanimously: “That the Minister of Defence be Informed, that the Waikato R.S.A. is of opinion that tire time is long overdue for a strict comb-out of all occupations to provide replacements for men who have already rendered long and honourable service.”
