ADVANCE TO MADANG
AUSTRALIANS NEAR ROGADJIM (Received Feb. 1, II a.m.) SYDNEY, Feb. 1 Australian troops in the Ramu Valley have occupied the twin villages of Asake and Kisa, only 18 miles south-west of Bogadjim ; an important Japanese coastal supply base near Madang. East of this force, other Australians who routed the Japanese in a five-days battle in the Fjnisterre mountains, are overcoming a temp- ! orary check north of Kankiryo Saddle. The saddle is 20 miles south of Bogadjim. Australians in this area are reported to be preparing to annihilate a suicide force of about 100 Japanese comprising the enemy rearguard. Outposts in the area have been captured. These threaten the Japanese supply lines to their forward troops and also lead to the motor road running from Bogadjim northward through Madang.
More than 300 Japanese killed have been counted in the area during the last five days. The bodies of many others lie in the deep gorges and have not been counted.
