PUBLIC OPINION
CURRENT VIEWPOINTS PRESERVATION OF FRUIT (To the Editor) Sir, —In view of the high price t»f fruit and the urge to save everything possible I suggest to the public of New Zealand the following:— Collect all your windfall apples, cut them into slices- about threesixteenths of an inch thick, without the core, and spread them on sheet: of iron—off the ground. The su>, will dry them thoroughly in three days. If corrugated iron is not available use your concrete paths, with paper spread over them, or old doors, or anything that will give a flat surface. The above method can be applied to plums, peaches, grapes, etc. The peaches would need to be stoned.—l am, etc., BILL THE BRANDBLOTTER. HOUSE CONSTRUCTION (To the Editor) Sir, —“Domicile’s” constructive criticism of the cottage in Tisdale Street is worthy of consideration He says “Presumably the Government will not be particularly interested ar houses of its own standard are being built at something like double the cost.” One point in which this cottage differs materially from the Government erections is the internal design, oy which all space is utilised, which greatly appeals to all who nave inspected it. The combined bathroom and washhouse is an instance, and so are the arrangement of bins, drawers and built-in cupboard and wardrobe. The exclusion of a hall or passage is another saving of space greatly appreciated by working people of limited means. Another point in the construction is the employment of private enterprise as contrast to “Government stroke.” The whole construction being of material manufactured in New Zealand, it should certainly appeal to our Labour Government. A thorough inspection and careful investigation may lead to better things for the homeless.—l am, etc., H. HARRISON.
