CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY SECTION PLAY IN FOURS (By Telegrspii.—press Association) DUNEDIN, Monday Four days will be necessary to complete sectional games In tlie rinks at tlie nuTional bowling tournament. One thousand entrants in 250 fours played their first games on 20 greens this morning. Conditions were ideal for bowling. One of the best games of the day was between J. Scott’s Dunedin four and the Kaikoura four, skipped by J. A. Gagliardi. At one stage the score was 17 to 5 against the Dunedin team, which made a remarkable recovery to win 30 to 20. In its second game Scott’s team met the Carlton, four, skipped by G. A. Deare, who was skip of the champion Dunedin team in 1931. Deare had a narrow win in the morning against A. S. McDougall (Caversham) by one point. Playing against Scott, Deare got 7 and 4 to draw level going to the last end, 22-all. Scott got one on the last end to gain a win. H. C. Alloo (Owaka), playing against C. Spearman (Christchurch R.S.A.), on the Dunedin green wanted three to tie in the last end and was lying two shots. His last bowl would have given him a tie had it not fallen over the wrong way. and he lost, 20—19. In his second game Spearman was beaten 19—18 by J. W. Stephenson (Nelson).

There were some particularly highscoring games. E. McFaull (Tainui), who won both of hjs games at Logan Park, defeated J. E. Gray (Kia Toa). 40—30. in the second round, but the most decisive win of the day was scored by T. F. Mitchell i Blenheim) against H. Stoneman (Sumner), the margin being 41 to 5. In the same section L. W. Besley (New Brighton), who was runner-up in 1941. was beaten by J. Hope (North-ea'st Valley), 19—18.
