STRONGHOLDS SMASHED

OFFENSIVE IN THE NORTH FIERCE GERMAN RESISTANCE (Official Wireless) (Received Jan. 18, 1 p.m.) RUGBY, Jan. 17 Soviet troops are continuing to push back the enemy in the area north of Ncvo Sokoniki, states the Moscow radio. Lakes covered with unsafe ice, thick forests and whole areas covered with snow are characteristics of this region. The Germans, taking advantage of the terrain, have erected a number of strongholds and are offering fierce resistance. Soviet troops, despite all the difficulties., are forging ahead, carrying out skilful by-pass manoeuvres and encircling and annihilating the strong points. One Soviet detachment in the course of the day advanced four and a-half miles and captured one battery of 105 millimetre guns and one mortar battery. In one sector Soviet troops, capturing an important locality, wiped out 150 Germans. Soviet tanks are actively supporting the Soviet infantry. In one sector on this front Soviet tommygunners on tanks broke into a locality and wiped out the enemy garrison, capturing two lorries on a tractor and over 1000 shells. The enemy launched two fierce counterattacks but the tommy-gunners, together with tanks, repelled the attacks and held on firmly until the Soviet main forces arrived.
