SWIMMING CARNIVAL
COMPLETING ARRAN IMPORTANT FIXTURE Arrangements are fcelng completed for the Hamilton Swimming Club’s intercentre carnival to be held at the municipal baths on January 24. Visiting- swimmers will be present from the Auckland, Nelson and Bay of Plenty centres. A direct appeal has been made to women’s organisations and the people of Hamilton to provide billets for the visitors, who will be arriving on Sunday, January 23, following the conclusion of the national championships at Auckland the previous day. The visitors, who will number in the vicinity of 100. will include a number of New Zealand title-holders. Other wellknown figures in the swimming world who will be present include Mr W. Jenkins, president of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, Mr Baxter O’Neill, secretary of that body. Mr D. W'oodfleld, chairman of the nominlon Water Polo Control Board. Mr Rex Moore, president or the Auckland Association, and Mr J. Miller, chairman of the Auckland Centre. Invitations have been extended to A. Gordon, an American diving champion, to give exhibitions during the evening, and to Captain Warner, a former world breaststroke champion, who several months ago lost a log in lighting in the Solomons. Inter-Centre Events There will be a special programme of inter-centre events in which champions of each centre will be seen in competition. A special invitation relay race will be arranged between the individual centres and Air Force and Army teams. Arrangements for the entertainment or visiting swimmers include a visit to the Hamilton Lake and the Ruakura Farm on the Monday afternoon. A social function will follow I hp swimming carnival on Monday night. The Nelson team, which will he the last one to leave for home, will be entertained at dinner the following day. To help meet the expense connected with the staging of the carnival, which will be one of the biggest ever held in Hamilton, an appeal lias been made to Hie people or Hamilton for assistance in the matter of trophies an ddonations and already £lO lias been subscribed. The Hamilton Club is trying to obtain in the near future the services of one or the best coaches in New Zealand, who will bo available Tree or cliargo to all members. 11r* will also instruct the club’s panpl of coaches.
