EARLY END UNLIKELY
AMERICAN OPINION ON WAR WASHINGTON, Jan. 14 A quick ending of the war was unlikely, said Colonel F. W. Knox, Secretary to the Navy, at a Press conference at Cleveland. “There is no ground for the expectation that the German home front will collapse,” Colonel Knox added. “Himmler’s Gestapo control makes the difference between the last war and this. The German people realise that they are surrounded by enemies, and if the German military breaks down their prospects are not very rosy. “The Pacific war wiil take a long time and will be costly. We have just begun to break the Japanese outer defences. It is a fight to the bitter end. We have established predominance at sea and in the air and move about pretty freely in the South Pacific without enemy interruption, but it would be an error to ascribe this to fear.”
