GERMAN MANOEUVRES
DEFENCE OF GREEK CAPITAL LONDON, Jan. 14 The Germans carried out largescale manoeuvres in the suburbs of Athens last week, according to GreeK sources in London. The object was practice in repelling an attack on the Greek capital. After the manoeuvres armoured forces paraded the streets to impress the population. It is also stated that, following the wholesale destruction of entire towns and villages in Greece by the Germans as reprisals for sabotage by inhabitants, refugees have fled from their homes to large towns hoping to find food and shelter. Wherever sabotage is committed, the Germans as a reprisal destroy towns and villages within 25 miles. Many refugees, hungry, half-naked and barefooted, have had to make their way across mountains to reach a haven of comparative safety. A special committee has been formed in Athens, under the chairmanship of a Greek general, to take care of the refugees.
