RAIL JOURNEYS
RESTRICTIONS PROBABLE FINAL DECISION TOMORROW (By Telegraph.—press Association) WELLINGTON, Thursday The Assistant General Manager of Railv/ays, Mr J. Sawers, said the final decision whether the restrictions would be imposed on Monday was not likely to be made until Friday. In the intervening time the department would have an opportunity to ascertain whether the coal supply position had improved sufficiently to avoid taking the final step. Broadly speaking, there would be one express daily on the other lines, making a total of three return runs a week. For example, on the New Plymouth, Napier and /Rotorua lines there would be a through train to each place on alternate days and return runs made on the intervening days. Permits would be required for journeys over 50 miles, but there would be no restrictions on the ordinary suburban services. When the restrictions were last imposed in 1942 they applied only to the North Island, but if introduced on this occasion they would affect both islands.
