0 ASM AT A BOMBED LONDON, Nov. 23. Makin Island, the chief Allied objective in the Gilbert group, has been captured, says a communique from Pearl Harbour. The Americans have also consolidated their positions on Tarawa Island. Gasmata. the Japanese base in Southern New Britain, has again been bombed heavily. Good progress is being made against enemy concentrations on the eastern end of Betio Island which is part of the Tarawa atoll. Its capture is assured. The situation on Abemama is well in hand. These details are announced in the latest con.munique from Admiral Nimitz's headquarters. Success of Offensive Assured Allied rcids against the Marshall Islands continue to be made by car-rier-based planes and land-based Liberators. Admiral Nimitz is reported as saying that the success of the Allied Central Pacific offensive is assured. The spokesman at Admiral Nimitz’s headquarter: said that there are several thousand Japanese on Betio Island, but it is uncertain whether there is any enemy resistance on other parts of the Tarawa atoll. Enemy strength on Makin is only one-fifth of that encountered at Betio. The spokesman added that Japanese air activity has been limited during the- assaults on the Gilbert Islands and only minor damage has been inflicted upon our forces.
