CHARTER FOR WOMEN
AUSTRALIAN RESOLUTIONS (Received Nov. 23. 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, Nov. 23 An Australian women's charter of about 5000 words was adopted by the Australian women's conference, which has ended. It demands among other things an endowment from the Commonwealth Government to “women homemakers’’ of at least 30s a week. The conference chairman, Mrs Jessie Street, described the recommendation as “epoch making.” The charter demands an improvement in the legal status of women, including amendments to the Married Women’s Property Act to provide for community of interest in property acquired after marriage by either party other than by inheritance. The full charter embodies all the resolutions passed by the conference. It demands that no discrimination be made in the rights and responsibilities of men and women as citizens, equal pay for equal work and encouragement for women to take part in all phases of public life. The conference also seeks “wide representation” for women at the international peace conference.
