RUSSIANS’ TWIN DRIVES
TROOPS MAKING GOOD PROGRESS GREAT STRENGTH IN NEW BRIDGEHEAD PINCERS MOVEMENT—ANOTHER SEABORNE LANDING LONDON, Nov. 22 Twin Russian drives in the Dnieper bend are making good progress. The Germans say the Russians are using overwhelming force in the two drives and are building up great strength in the new bridgehead at Cherkasy. Nikopol is being threatened from the rear. Latest reports from Moscow state that the Russian advances south of Kremenchug and south-west of Dnepropetrovsk threaten to break the German positions in the Dnieper Bend based on
Krivoi Rog. The Red Army is attempting to squeeze out the Germans in a new pincers movement. In the Korostyshev area the Russians have advanced on two sectors after repelling enemy counter-attacks. Reuter’s Moscow correspondent says Russian forces striking north-west of Rietchitsa have captured Gorwal, a heavily-fortified German stronghold on ihe banks of the Beresina. The German news agency reports that the Russians made another seaborne landing south of Kerch, in the Crimea. Twenty landing craft, escorted by gunboats, took part. The agency claims that three fully-laden craft were sunk. It adds that three reached their objective, but the remainder were driven off.
