CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

PAST YEAR REVIEWED The annual meeting of the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce was held in Toorak Chambers last night, the president, Mr A. M. Bisley, presiding. In tracing the activities of the chamber over the past year Mr Bisley said that for most of the year general meetings were called each month, but as only council members attended these meetings it was decided to open the matter for discussion at the annual meeting, for the purpose of deciding the best means of conducting the chamber’s business. Mid-day meetings were not found to be satisfactory during the year and in May it was decided to revert to evenings. A resume of business transacted at the annual conference at Dunedin in November was given by Mr H. E. Schofield, of Matamata, a member of the Associated Chambers executive. He mentioned a suggestion made by Professor A. H. Tocker, at Canterbury College, in connection with the issue of Treasury bills for the purpose of enabling investment in short-term loans. Mr C. W. Pepperell outlined the steps being taken to raise the balance of Hamilton’s patriotic fund quota. Ways and means of raising patriotic moneys were discussed by the meeting.

The following officers were elected: President, Mr O. Svenson; vice-pre-sjdent, Mr J. D. Edgecombe; council members, Messrs R. Braithwaite, T. J. Shaw, C. B. Prisk, C. W. Pepperell, A. J. Yendell, A. M. Bisley, A. M. Rosie and J. J. Branton. A resolution accorded a vote of thanks to Mr Bisley and placed on record the Chamber’s appreciation of his services in the past two years. The meeting decided to dispense with the monthly general meeting and to revert to the method of conducting its business through the council of the Chamber except when the council considered it necessary to call a special general meeting.
