CADETS INSPECTED
MAJOR-GENERAL’S VISIT The sound military training being 1 received by secondary school boys was emphasised yesterday afternoon when cadets of the Ist Cadet Battalion, Waikato Regiment (Hamilton Technical High School), were inspected by the Officer Commanding the Northern Military District. MajorGeneral P. H. Bell, D. 5.0., A.D.C., N.Z.S.C., at the school grounds. The primary object of Major-General Bell’s visit was to examine Cadet Sergeant-Major Maurice Keith Smith, of the Battalion, who is the No. 4 Military Area’s nominee for the William Robert Friar Prize The Friar Prize is awarded to the most efficient N.C.O. in each of the three military districts, and MajorGeneral Bell has been recently examining the nominees for the prize in his district. The prize is in memory of Cadet Colour-Sergeant W. R. Friar, who was killed in Flanders in 1917. He was the first cadet from New Zealand to be welcomed by Lord Roberts, who had instituted cadet education journeys to England in 190*3. Sergeant Friar represented New Zealand at BisTey and gained second place in two of the principal competitions.
