EXTRA FARM LABOUR

WORK OF TERRITORIALS SATISFACTION EXPRESSED Satisfaction with the work of territorials in assisting farmers with their ensilage making was expressed today by Mr R. A. Candy, chairman of the Waikato Primary Production Council, who added that he was very pleased with the way in which the Army authorities had responded to the appeal for help. The first contact with the Army was made on October 27, and all requirements then asked for were filled on November 1. When the requirements for further men were placed before the Army additional men were sent to the Waikato on November 15, and all specific requests were met. Mr Candy said that so far the men had been given much appreciated help on many farms, and where the work was well organised by the farmers, the service rendered was very valuable indeed. Morrinsvllle Situation

Mr Candy said he wished to dissociate himself from the resolutions passed by farmers in the Morrinsville district in which they demanded an immediate supply of labour to help with the ensilage making. Following this meeting when investigations were made as to the actual requirements of the Morrinsville district, it was found that only seven men were actually asked for. The men were made available on November 15, and when they reported for work they were informed that they were not wanted.

Concluding, Mr Candy said the council was satisfied that where the local committees had done their work properly and ascertained the men required in the various areas, the scheme would work satisfactorily. It was most necessary, however, that groups of farmers should be organised so that when the men were made available their services could be utilised to the best advantage.
