Curtin, declared when speakiig at a welcome to the Canadian press delegation shortly to visit New Zealand. He said: “Australians have it in their power to shorten or prolong the war by their behaviour. Australia has already made big sacrifices By intensifying their contribution to the v/ar effort Australians can deprive the enemy of the chance to recuperate or reorganise his forces. We may feel entitled to ease up because the time of crisis has passed. “3ut fighting men still have to be at their peak and all the Allied Nations must exert -heir maximum efforts. The enemy may be going back, but he must be made to race back by a greater degree of sacrifice. deprivation and more rigid discipline than ever.” Government Control of Mines
Government control of coal-min-ing would have to remain in some form long after the war ended, Australia’s roal commissioner, Mr Mighell has declared. Yesterday, at a round-table conference of the Federal Government, coal owners and miners’ representatives Mr Mighell was given virtual control of all Australia's coal pro due* ion problems, including securing a continuity of work in the mines.
He said the Government would have to design post-war machinery that would prevent coal owners from entering on ruinous price wars to exploit available markets. This control would also ensure that coal was conserved ?s a national asset and not wasted by bad mining or otner faults.
The representatives at yesterday’s conference pledged themselves to do everything possible to collaborate with each other to increase the coal output and maintain a continuity of production in all mines. Every coalmine in New South Wales was working yesterday.
