“Moscow, in the name of Russia, today is saluting our valiant troops with 24 salvoes from 324 guns. I thank all troops who took part for the excellent execution of their military operations. Eternal glory to those who have fallen in the struggle for the liberation and independence of our land! Death to the German invader!” Honour for Czechs

The order was addressed to General Nicholas Vatutin, commander of the First Ukrainian Army, who led. the Russian forces during the coun-ter-offensive at Stalingrad last December. The order named the generals whose troops had distinguished themselves and listed units which, henceforth, will bear the name “Kiev ”

The First Czech Brigade has been awarded the Order of Suvorov, second class for its part in liberating Kiev. The Moscow radio says the Soviet Union has awarded Marshal Stalin the Order of Suvorov, first class, for his successful military leadership. Streets of cities, towns and villages throughout Russia, decorated for today’s anniversary of the October Revolution, rapidly filled with cheering and excited crowds after mid-day yesterday when the first news of the victory at Kiev was broadcast. The recapture of the city was a fitting prelude to the anniversary celebrations.
