REIGN OF TERROR
GERMANS IN NORTH ITALY
LONDON, Sept. 28
The German reign of terror over Northern Italy has become as frightful as anything in their record of war crimes. They are raping, shooting, robbing and destroying in unrestrained fury against their former allies, says Reuter’s correspondent with the Fifth Army.
i Thousands of hunted refugees are coming over the mountains to Fifth Army outposts. They speak of Germans rounding-up civilian men and taking them off northward, nobody knows where, and of Germans dragging women away who are never seen again. When their orders are not instantly obeyed they start shooting, and whole families have been wiped out and their stores of food stolen. The Brindisi correspondent of the British United Press says that refugees from Rome say the Germans shelled the centre of Rome before they entered the city. Then they looted it. They held up civilians and took their watches and wallets. The Algiers radio says the Germans are evacuating factory workers from Naples. Small contingents of workers have already been transferred to Germany.
