In the Hauraki electorate three candidates will lose their deposits. They are Messrs D. C. Beloe (D.L.), H. T. Head (P.M.), and R. G. Young (R.D.M.) Altogether 127 candidates, or over 40 per cent of the number nominated throughout the Dominion will forfeit their deposits of £lO, representing a gain to the Treasury of £1270. Deposits are forfeited by those who obtain less than a quarter of the number of votes polled by the successful candidate. Only eight candidates forfeited thei rdeposifs in the 1938 election but in that year the contest was a straight-out one. The Democratic Labour Party did not fare well and of its 53 candidates 52 will pay the forfeit. Its leader, Mr J. A. Lee, was the only candidate of the party to poll sufficient votes to retain his deposit. In none of the European electorates will any candidate nominated by either the Labour or National Parties lose his deposit.
