DEPOSITS FORFEITED
TOTAL OF 127 ASPIRANTS TWO HAMILTON CANDIDATES Of the four candidates in the Hamilton electorate two will forfeit their deposits on the provisional results. They are the Independent candidate, Mr W. H. Thompson, and the Democratic Labour candidate, Warrant Officer A. E. Allen. In the Waikato electorate Mr G. G. Burke (Democrat Labour) and Mr J. H. Penniket (Independent) will forfeit their deposits, while in Raglan Mr S. Burton (R.D.M.) and Mr A. Dillon (Democrat Labour) also did not obtain sufficient votes to receive back iheir deposits. In the Hauraki electorate three candidates will lose their deposits. They are Messrs D. C. Beloe (D.L.), H. T. Head (P.M.), and R. G. Young (R.D.M.) Altogether 127 candidates, or over 40 per cent of the number nominated throughout the Dominion will forfeit their deposits of £lO, representing a gain to the Treasury of £1270. Deposits are forfeited by those who obtain less than a quarter of the number of votes polled by the successful candidate. Only eight candidates forfeited thei rdeposifs in the 1938 election but in that year the contest was a straight-out one. The Democratic Labour Party did not fare well and of its 53 candidates 52 will pay the forfeit. Its leader, Mr J. A. Lee, was the only candidate of the party to poll sufficient votes to retain his deposit. In none of the European electorates will any candidate nominated by either the Labour or National Parties lose his deposit.
