At meetings in Petone and Lower Hutt Mr John Hogan, Independent candidate for Hutt, referred to state- ; ments about his character made by i the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. P. Fraser, in his speech broadcast from j the Wellington Town Hall on Thursday night. Mr Hogan said that Mr Fraser j knew that his standing in Australia was of the highest aud that when he I came to New Zealand on a lecture ! tour before settling here he carried ' the highest credentials from public I men in Australia, including letters of ’ introduction to Mr Fraser himself j from one of Mr Fraser’s personal friends there, who held, and still holds, Cabinet rank. Mr Hogan said that he considered the remarks amounted to defamation of charac- : ter and he was placing the matter in the hands of his solicitors.
