ITALIANS FLOGGED

DESTRUCTION IN NAPLES (Received Sept. 23, 2 p.m ) . LONDON, Sept. 22 Amid terrific explosions as the Germans blow up docks, jetties and warehouses under an ever-growing pull of smoke, German soldiers are flogging Italians in the streets of Naples for the most trivial offences. In revealing this an Italian sailor who escaped from Naples to Capri in a rowing-boat gave the Allied Headquarters a grim story of conditions within the city. He said that Germans, on a variety of pretexts, are rounding up as many as 5C Italians at a time, shooting them e.o bloc. Other Italians who escaped report rape, pillage and slaughter comparable with anything which occurred in Warsaw. The Rome radio tonight announced that Kesseiring has ordered the execution of anybody guilty of hoarding food or operating a black market. This is stated to be essential to overcome the serious food shortages. Neutral reports stares that Germans are looting food from Italian villages and farms because of the failure of their own food supplies. The Rome radio further ordered all men within Rome belonging to the 1920-25 military classes to report immediately for service. The Algiers radio reports that Germans fired on crowds which were demonstrating in Rome, where resistance is increasing.
