FIGURES QUESTIONED

LABOUR AND PRODUCTION DUNEDIN, Tuesday Mr James Begg, president of the New Zealand Farmers’ Federation denied a statement by the Minister of National Service, the Hon. A. McLagan, that male workers on New Zealand farms numbered 8300 more than‘in the middle of 1942. Mr Begg said that as regards general farms the figures were incorrect. Such farms were starving for labour. This additional number quoted must be on the new vegetable farms. Mr McLagan’s statement that agricultural production had increased during the war period was equally incorrect. Last year the freezing works handled 1,000,000 fewer carcases than in the previous year, and there was a serious dairy production decline. As regards factory production money comparisons meant nothing today. Only volume comparisons were of value.
