JUNIOR RED CROSS

21ST BIRTHDAY PARTY To celebrate the Dominion-wide event of the coming-of-age of the New Zealand Junior Red Cross, members from the twelve circles in the Cambridge district spent a happy day on Saturday. During the morning circles conducted stalls in the town where the accumulated effort resulted in over forty pounds being raised. These proceeds will be contributed towards a special fund to be raised throughout the Waikato Centre to establish a cot in the Sunshine Ward of the Waikato Hospital. At the Parish Hall in the afternoon the celebration was continued with a party when a programme of games preceded the highlight of the day—the lighting of the twenty-one candles on the birthday cake iced to represent the badge of the Junior Red Cross. Mrs H. A. Pegg one of the two organisers of Junior Red Cross in the Waikato Centre was present, and asked the children to thank their teachers who had arranged the party and the ladies who helped with serving. Mr Edgar James, the Mayor of Cambridge and Patron of the Cambridge sub-centre then spoke expressing his pride in the fact that 500 children in the district were members of such a great organisation as the Red Cross. Mrs Pegg was presented with a beautiful bouquet of flowers from the children. The ceremony of Lighting the candles was carried out by the president of each circle, the secretaries and treasurers blowing out the 21 flames. Little Judith Kenny cut the cake. Mrs Kenny, chairwoman and convenor of the Junior Red Cross committee in Cambridge, organised a party of helpers from the Cambridge sub-centre and the Voluntary Aid Detachment who assisted with the afternoon tea. Mrs H. C. Tod, president; Mrs W. M. Porteous, V.A.D. Commandant; and a number of members of the Cam- j bridge sub-centre were also present. I NEARLY CHOKED! He gapped!
