U BOAT MENACE

COLONEL KNOX’S WARNING (Received Sept. 8, 1 "p.m.) WASHINGTON, Sept. 7 Colonel Knox said the slackening in submarine attacks is probably duo to the recall of U-boats in order to refit with additional anti-aircraft defences. Colonel Knox added: “As sure as sunrise they will be back.” He pointed out "that the U-boat new antiaircraft tactics reduced the usefulness of blimps and the potential usefulness of helicopters. Blimps were exceptionally successful against submarines until the U-boats took to firing at the blimps. Colonel Knox warned against the tendency to believe that the submarine menace had stopped. He said: “It has diminished but has not been eliminated.”
