OBITUARY

MRS BESSIE HOLDEN The death has occurred of a wellknown resident of Hamilton, Mrs Bessie Graham Holden. The daughter of Mr and Mrs Alexander MacGregor, who came out to New Zealand from Scotland in 1850, Mrs Holden was born at Wanganui 87 years ago. There was a large family, of whom two are still living, Mr Malcolm MacGregor (Masterton) and Mrs Elmslie (Waverley), who is in her 94th year. Mrs Holden married Mr Thomas Holden, a farmer at Hunterville, where they lived until coming to Hamilton over 30 years ago. During the whole period of her residence in Hamilton she lived in Lake House, Lake Crescent. She was a loyal supporter of the Anglican church, attending services at St. Peter’s for many years. In 1925 Mrs Holden paid a visit to England and Scotland, where she visited the old home of her parents. Mr Holden predeceased her in 1920. Of the family of three daughters and two sons, two daughters and one son survive her. They are Mrs L. R. Jordan (Timaru), Mrs G. W. Gower (Hamilton) and Mr N. J. Holden (Hamilton). Her other son, Mr John Holden, died of wounds at Gallipoli in the last war. Mrs V. H. Sansom, a daughter, died in July, 1942. MR L. N. SARGENT The death has occurred of Mr Louis Norman Sargent at the age of 59 years. Bom at Christchurch in 1884, he lived for many years at Ellerslie, and maried Miss Ada Cross on September 21, 1910. Mr Sargent came to reside in Hamilton in 1925, commencing business as a house painter and decorator and then in 1926 starting a garage and petrol business, which he conducted until two months ago, when he retired to live in Papatoetoe. Mr Sargent was interested in various sporting activities, taking a keen interest in the Hamilton Motor Cycle Club, J.he Hamilton branch of the Auckland Aero Club, the Hamilton Rowing Club and the Hamilton East Tennis Cjub. He took a prominent part in starting the Hamilton Home Guard. He was one of the first to recognise the potentiality of Rukuhia as an airport and was one of the promoters of the first air. and motor carnival to be held there. At the weekly parade of the Hamilton Women’s Auxiliary Volunteer Corps last night tribute was paid to the memory of Mr Sargent, who had helped to organise the corps. Mr Sargent is survived by his wife and one daughter, Mrs A. McLaren, of Hamilton. MR W. J. NORTH 1 The death has occurred of Mr William James (Jim) North, of Te Awamutu, who was well known throughout the Waikato. Born at Te Rahu 65 years ago, he was a son of pioneer parents, and in his early manhood was a prominent Rugby player, representing Waikato on several occasions. Later he became a keen bowler, holding many offices in the Te Awamutu Bowling Club, besides j playing on most greens in the province. Mr North identified himself with many facets of public life and was a councillor for 20 years. He represented the borough on the Te Awamutu Power Board, was chairman of the Te Awamutu Terminating Building Society, a foundation member of the Te Awamutu Municipal Band, and a member and senior officer of the Manchester Unity, Lodge of Oddfellows, Te Awamutu. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, i Mrs Phyllis Atkinson, of Te Kawa.
