Importation of Mandarins Efforts are being made to induce the New Zealand Government to import mandarins, formerly known as the poor man’s oranges, from Australia, according to a prominent Christchurch fruit . merchant, who said he had been reliably informed that negotiations had been proceeding for some time. Reports from Australia, he said, indicated that mandarins could be shipped to New Zealand at the rate of 12s for a case of 240 mandarins. That mean that they could be sold to retailers for not more than £1 a case, or a penny apiece. On the same basis, the public would be able to buy them at the rate of eight for one shilling. That was for the largest size. The smallest size could be retailed up to 16 a shilling.
