GIVEN NO REST

i ——• j GERMANS AND RUMANIANS ! BATTLES IN RUSSIA j APPALLING WEATHER United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) (Received April 12. 3.15 p.m.) LONDON, April 11 The Russians are giving the Germans and Rumanians no rest in the low’er Kuban-Novorossisk bridgehead, despite the continjance of appalling weather. Floods are impeding the troops’ movements. The Russian artillery and infantry miss nr chance of launching ground attacks sgaT.'f the Kuban area, also around Nv. \ ci' ssisk and Krymskaya. The Stockholm correspondent oi the Times says that the Russian:since April 5 have constantly shelled Novorossisk with heavy guns landed since February on both sides of the inlet on which Novorossisk is situated. German efforts, resumed a week ago to drive the Russians from ihe bridgeheads in the middle and upper Donetz, have scarcely altered the relative positions. The present week has begun with the Russians holding the local initiative around Isyum and making spirited sallies, while the weight and intensity of the German attacks at Balakleya, Chuguiev and Bielgorod have abated markedly. A Soviet communique states: South of Byeloi a German unit attempted to penetrate into our rear. The attempt was frustrated and the Germans suffered losses. In another sector of the central front the Germans attempted to regain lost positions. The plan failed and one enemy infantry company was wiped out. Garrison Wiped Out A Soviet partisan group, operating in the Orel area, attacked a German garrison and wiped out 200 enemy iroops and captured a large quantity of booty. Another group, operating in the same area, derailed an enemy military train, many Germans ben j killed or wounded. The Moscow’ radio tonight announced that Russian planes last night raided Konigsberg. attacking military and economic targets. Large fires and explosions w’ere observed. All the planes returned safely.
