“BACK-SEAT” DRIVER

WIFE CAUGHT NAPPING There was an amusing interlude in the Magistrate’s Court, Hamilton, yesterday, during the prosecution of a motorist, Leslie Philip S. Haynes, on a charge of driving over the Victoria Street railway crossing while the line was not clear. Defendant, when asked if he had any explanation to make, said his wife had not noticed the train. “Was your wife driving the car?” Mr W. H. Freeman, S.M., queried. “No. I was, sir,” defendant answered. A “back-seat” driver? Does she drive a car?—Yes, quite a lot of times. Your Worship. Defendant further explained, amid laughter, that usually his wife gave him ample warning of approaching danger but she had not done so on this occasion. Senr.-Sergeant A. G. McHugh: It looks as if I should have prosecuted the wife also. A fine of £1 was imposed by a smiling magistrate.
