WORK OF CORVETTE’S CREW (Official Wireless) (Received April 10, 11 40 a.m.) RUGBY, April 9 For seven hours the British corj vette Lavender lay alongside a blazing Panamanian freighter while the corvette’s crew fought and extin- ! guished the lire. The freighter had j been on fire for two days in the Caribbean Sea and when the corvette arrived the bridge and superstructure were already gutted. I While the corvette's crew shifted , depth charges and ammunition be- | low decks to safer positions Comi ander J. Whayman, then in command j of the Lavender, brought his ship ! alongside the blazing freighter. The , fire was gradually extinguished and j the freighter was towed by tugs to I harbour. I For this daring exploit Commander ] Whayman, together with four others iof the corvette’s personnel, had I been mentioned in despatches.
