CROSSING SMASH

VAN-DRIVER KILLED LINE STREWN WITH WRECKAGE (By Telegraph.—l-ress Association) AUCKLAND, Thursday A level crossing smash at Tuakau at 7 a.m. today resulted in the death of the driver of a van. He was— Mr William Archibald Smeed, married, aged 60, of Ilarrisville. Mr Smead, who is a well-known quarry owner, left home a few minutes before the accident to go to a metal quarry at Pukekawa. He was crossing the railway at George Street when an extra passenger train from Wellington struck his runabout van, throwing his body about half a chain, completely wrecking the van and strewing the line with wreckage. Death was instantaneous. Mr Smeed, a certificated traction engine driver, drove the leading engine across Gralton Bridge on a trial test alter the completion of the bridge 32 years ago. He was a former South Auckland Rugby representative and was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
