WESTLAND CELEBRATES
ARRIVAL OF DELEGATION (By Telegraph.—Press Association) HOKITIKA, Saturday The Netherland delegation to the Tasman Tercentenary celebrations, headed by Dr. Charles O. Van Der Plas, arrived at Hokitika last evening, accompanied by the Minister of Internal Affairs, the Hon. W. E. Parry. At a civic welcome extended by the Hokitika Borough and County Councils in the soldiers’ hall there was a large gathering of townspeople. The Hon. R. Semple, P. C. Webb and J. O'Brien were also present. The Mayor of Hokitika, Mr Elcock, presided and addresses were given by Mr O’Neil, chairman of the Hokitika County Council, the Hon. W. E. Parry and the Hon. J. O’Brien. Dr Van Der Plas replied, expressing appreciation at the warm welcome extended and his plasure at being in the district to assist in celebrating the notable anniversary. This afternoon the formal celebration of the Tasman Tercentenary is taking place at Hokitika, when a large gathering of town and country people is assured. Tomorrow the delegation will travel by plane to Okarito and Waiho. This morning Dr. Van Der Plas placed a wreath on the South African war memorial.
