Copyright) (Received Dec. 14, 3.15 p.m.) SAN FRANCISCO, Dec. 13 Aboard the battered cruiser San Francisco Admiral King pinned the Congressional Medal on the breast of Commander Bruce McCandless, who, j as lieutenant-commander, took over i the ship’s direction in the thick of the battle, and. in the words of Mr Roosevelt’s citation, through brilliant seamanship and great courage brought the ship to port and saved her to fight again. The San Francisco whipped a Japanese battleship on November 13 in the opening phase of the Solomons naval battle. Earlier Mr Roosevelt announced the award of the Congressional Medal to Admiral Callaghan, who was killed on the San Francisco.
