RUSSIAN INITIATIVE
THOUSANDS OF PRISONERS (United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright) LONDON, Dec. 13 A special Soviet announcement states that since November 19, when the Russian offensive began in the Stalingrad area, 72,400 prisoners have been taken and 94,000 of the enemy killed. Four-fifths of the lirisoners were Germans and the rest Rumanians. In the Stalingrad area up to December 11 the Russians captured 105 aircraft, 1510 tanks, 2134 guns, 1714 mortars, 4175 machine-guns, 20,000,000 rounds of ammunition and 7306 lorries. The Russians still hold the initiative on both the main battlefronts. Hitler is still trying to relieve General von Hoth’s position between the Volga id the Don with a shuttle service A air convoys. An atmosphere of suspence hangs over the Stalingrad front, where the Germans are ceaselessly fighting to wrest themselves from the Russian grip. Despatches state that the situation is fraught with many possibilities. The Times’ correspondent says a significant pointer to German expectations is that, although the Germans are flying in food to their encircled army, the Russians possess proof that they are evacuating high ranking officers.
