HIGH SCHOOL WINS

INTER-COLLEGE RUGBY Hamilton High School defeated King’s College by 9 points to 8 in a Rugby football match at Rugby Park yesterday. On the whole the game was a fast one in which many bright openings by both sides provided the spectators with an exhibition of Rugby such as only inter-school engagements can provide. Hamilton gave away weight in both the backs and forwards and was opposed by a fast combination. King’s backs appeared to handle more smartly and many fine dive passes from the half-back sent the backs away. However, the Hamilton team’s backs were much improved since the Sacred Heart match and fine evasive tactics, in the main by Stanley, caught King’s napping many times. Led by the captain, Fleming, Hamilton’s forwards surpassed the King’s pack in the loose, but the visiting pack hooked the ball from most of the scrums because of the weight. The most, outstanding forward for King’s was McAlister, who throughout the game led the pack. From the outset High School was on the offensive and until half-time kept well into King's territory. High School was awarded two penalties but the angle proved too much for Stanley. From a scrum near the half-way High School secured possession and from a kick to the centre Thomas crossed in the corner to open the account | for High School. The try was not converted. Well placed centre kicks by the King's backs placed them well down into High School ground for the first time and Fendall, although tackled by several High School men, scored. Hellaby converted. High School forwards were on the ball from the kick-off and from a line-out on twenty-five Fleming scored. The first half ended 6—5 in favour of High : School. Tables Turned on Attackers High School pressed King’s hard, and ! many times as High School was nearing King’s line fine defensive play by the ! visitors turned the tables on the attackers i and King’s commenced passing rushes. ! During one of these counter-moves a ! King's player obstructed and High School was awarded a penalty in a handy position and Stanley goaled. With a short time to : play King's was on the attack in a fine passing movement and the right-wing* J. B. Reid, scored in the corner. A smartly intercepted pass by Shakeshaft started High School off. and because of high tackling bv King's backs Stanley and Brownlee were able to evade successfully. The danger was averted by clever line-kicking by King’s and the game ended with the score 9 points to 8 in favour of High School. One of the most notable factors contributing to the success of the Hamilton team was the clean tackling by the backs. Many King's moves were stifled at the last moment in this manner. An instance was when, near the end. King's backs were moving and a near runaway was made by Reid. The only High School man between him and the line was Barker, full-back, but Barker tackled him on the twenty--1 HV The curtain-raiser to the main game was between the Hamilton High School and Te 1 Awamutu High School second fifteens. The game resulted in a draw, with the score a 3. on No. 2 ground Hamilton High School sixth grade defeated Te Awamutu High School sixth grade 6—3.
