TEACHING STAFFS

MOTION CONCERNING APPEALS Notice of motion presented to the annual meeting of the Auckland Education Board yesterday by Mr S. B. Sims, of Hamilton, concerns the question of appealing for all teachers called in ballots for military duties. The motion will be further discussed at the next meeting of the board. Mr Sims referred to the fact that in two recent Gazettes there were vacancies for 48 teaching positions which had attracted no applicants. He gave notice of his intention to move at the next meeting that the board rescind its previous resolution to appeal only for head teachers and those instructing in mathematics and science, and appeal for all teachers, on condition that they enrol in the Home Guard. In his annual report the chairman. Mr W. J. Campbell, stated that 330 members of the board’s pre-war staff j were engaged on active service, while a further 200 had been mobilised for service with the National Military Reserve or the Territorial forces. The manner in which many married women teachers and retired teachers had come forward to fill war appointments was much appreciated by the board, but owing to the fact that these volunteers were, of necessity, available for employment in their home towns only, it would shortly be impossible to find teachers lor a number of sole charge i country schools.
