HOSPITAL TAXATION

PROPOSED CONFERENCE Members at today’s meeting of the Waikato Hospital Board stated that they had misunderstood the position regarding the proposed conference of hospital board and local body representatives on the need for alteration in the incidence of hospital taxation. The chairman, Mr F. Findlay, moved that the conference be representative of all hospital boards, not merely these in classes 1 and 2. He explained that those classes covered only the larger hospitals in the Dominion. Members agreed that it was only fair to have representation from all hospital boards, which number 42, and the Minister of Health will be notified of the Waikato Board’s desire. The conference proposal was considered at a meeting of the Takapuna Borough Council, Auckland. The Waikato board was of the opinion that until such a conference had been held, the subsidy payable to hospital boards by the Government should be increased immediately; or, alternatively, that the scale of fees payable from the social security fund for treatment of patients should be increased. The Takapuna council decided to ask for a sp.ecial meeting of the Suburban Local Bodies’ Association with a view to obtaining united action in applying to the Government for a refund of the increase in the Auckland Hospital Board levy.
