NEW ONE-ACT PLAY
WORK OF MR S. A. COOK PLAYBOX PRESENTATION Three one-act plays presented before a large audience at the fortnightly meeting of the Hamilton Playbox last night included a new play of the Hamilton author and producer, S. A. Cook. This was “A King’s Daughter,” based on the Biblical account of the treachery of King David toward his army captain Uriah in order to secure Bathsheba, the latter’s wife. Although the facilities did not admit of tne full setting for the play, it lost little in dramatic effect and proved up to the high standard of the author’s previous work of a similar type. The part of Michal, daughter of Saul and David’s first and childless wife, was well played by Mrs V. Linder, and the other parts, taken as follows, were filled adequately in support.—Tamar, Mrs Greer; Bathsheba, Miss I. Aiken; Uriah the Hittite, Mr M. Davidson; King David, Mr W. H. Blakeway; Miriam, nurse to Bathsheba, Mrs S. A. Cook; Nathan the Prophet, Mr Cook. Two one-act plays were read under the direction of Mrs P. N. Newland. In “Anti-Clockwise,” a drama by Muriel Box, the parts were taken by Mrs Scott, Mrs H. D. Curling, Miss Kennedy and Mrs Newland. The other play was the romance “Londonderry Air,” by Rachel Field. The j players were Miss Shirley Walker, : Miss M. Allen, Mr W. H. Blakeway | and Mr G. R. Bowden.
Mr H. M. Baker expressed thanks to Mr Cook for the presentation of his play and to the cast of the three performances. % Proceeds from the evening were for the club’s fund for sending parcels to members of the forces.
